Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs
Indie Horror Survivalist Strikes Again
Indie horror survivalist game "Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs" hit the Steam Store last week on Sept. 10. The second installment to the "Amnesia" franchise was highly anticipated by the gaming community and even offered a $4 discount to players who pre-ordered. "Amnesia" was developed by Frictional Games, the same masterminds behind the original title, as well as the "Penumbra" series. Read more »

Hearthstone: Beta
Card Game Battle Comes to the Warcraft Universe
I was one of the many people who was disappointed by the original "Hearthstone" announcement, hoping for something larger like the next "Diablo III" expansion or the next installment to "World of Warcraft. " I’m a big fan of the "Warcraft" universe and have been for years, but until I actually saw the beta for myself, I was not enthused. Read more »
The Bureau: XCOM Declassified
Best Dressed
The squad presses up against the cover, silent as can be. Peeking over the edge, they get a view of the alien patrols that wander the Small Town, USA street – the tiny squad of three is easily outnumbered five to one. Read more »
Eversion
Crawl Through Hell Itself to Save a Flower Princess
I’m going to deviate from the norm here and review an older game that I haven’t seen talked about since it was originally released in 2008 by Zaratustra Productions, an odd little gem called "Eversion". Read more »
Rogue Legacy
Dark Souls: Chibi Edition
It took a couple weeks of convincing by a friend for me to try this game. He swore up and down that I would like it, made me watch him play, tried everything he could to make me ignore my natural dislike of rogue-like games. Eventually I relented, because there was just something about the game that called to me. Read more »
Penny Arcade’s On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness 4
A Disappointing Finale
I guess it’s my fault; after Rain-Slick 3, I was eagerly anticipating what Zeboyd and Tycho would do with the final chapter in the Penny Arcade series. I tore through Rain-Slick 3 with zeal, a smile plastered on my face from beginning to end, and I played all the DLC that came with it. I went to a panel at PAX East just to see glimpses of what they were doing. I was excited for a great, retro RPG. Read more »
Splinter Cell: Blacklist
A Triumphant Return to What Made the Series Great
Not far into the opening level of “Blacklist”, Sam says to his longstanding friend, Vic, that it “feels just like the good old days”. After playing through Ubisoft’s newest addition to the “Splinter Cell” series, this quote perfectly encapsulates the “Blacklist” experience. The game has taken the best parts from all the installments before it, and as a result, is the best entry of the series to date. Read more »
Grand Theft Auto V: Most Expensive Video Game Production In History
Rockstar Isn't Messing Around
Rockstar is known for making big games. Not just games that everyone gets excited about, but games that are actually huge. When you drive through Liberty City in "Grand Theft Auto IV," it feels like you're actually driving through a real, functional city. In "Red Dead Redemption," riding through the desert or midwest forests in the game feels like a real, lengthy ordeal. Rockstar does not like little sandboxes. Read more »
The New Face of Gaming Addiction: Casual Games
Tapping the Time Away
I don’t like freemium games even when they come from publishers or developers who otherwise seem okay (but especially when they come from companies who win the "Golden Poo Award" for shady business practices). Like many gamers, I have serious beef with the concept of a game that boosts your experience or grants in-game bonuses for players willing or able to spend extra cash – sometimes significant amounts of dough – to gallop past otherwise grindy mechanics. Why would I want to play a game that I don’t really have to play? If I’m not playing, what’s the point? Read more »

Throwback Thursday: Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Awesome Vampire, Subpar Wolf
This week I looked at Konami’s 1997 release “Castlevania: Symphony of the Night” for the original PlayStation. The game was well received at the time, earning high scores across the board in a number of magazines, and that holds true for user feedback as well. A handful of people even went as far as to tell me that it was their favorite game from the PS1 era. So let’s get to it. Read more »

Xbox One to Support Eight Controllers
LAN Parties Just Got Bigger
When you think of console LANs, you think of four people gripping their controllers surrounding the TV in an attempt to back one another up or destroy each other. At least, I do. Today, Microsoft released that the Xbox One will be doubling that number with eight-controller support. Read more »

IRL with Shattered Stitch Cosplay
Getting Ready For Atlanta
One of the biggest fantasy/science fiction conventions, DragonCon, is right around the corner (this coming weekend, in fact). Last year, the Atlanta-based convention drew an attendance of 52,000, and a huge percentage of that number used the opportunity to assemble fantastic costumes to show off where their fandom lies. Some even come with more than one costume. It's safe to say that cosplay is a huge part of any geek convention. Read more »
