Sony and Microsoft Both Confirm No External HDD at Launch - Next generation consoles to only support internal storage

Both Sony and Microsoft confirmed this week that their next generation consoles will not support external hard drives for extra game storage.

Shuhei Yoshida, president of worldwide studios with Sony Computer Entertainment, confirmed the lack of support on Twitter on Aug. 31 with a simple “no.” Microsoft confirmed their own lack of support during the PAX Podcast late Sept. 1 on Major Nelson’s blog.

The PlayStation 4 contains an internal hard drive that is easily swapped out. Although there is no proof that the PS4 will ever receive external HDD support, the ease of swapping out drives provides users who need the extra space with a workaround. Maybe not ideal, but it’s something. In the case of the Xbox One, external HDD support was intended as a feature for the console; it is expected that support is still incoming but as a patch sometime after launch.
