Let’s Play with Coestar

The rise and fall of Coe’s Quest, looking to the future, and the risks of being creative

Many of you are familiar with Let’s Plays on YouTube; the uploader shares their experiences with a title, providing game play on screen with their own commentary. The Let’s Play community played a large role in "Minecraft’s" explosive nature with the free-form game play being prime selection for such commentary. In "Minecraft’s" fledgling days, David R.’s "X’s Adventures in Minecraft" and Seananners’s "Welcome to Minecraft" series both brought much attention to the game, but their channels were about covering a large number of games, always moving on to something new. Significant Games funded its flagship title "Insignificant" through Kickstarter Aug. 22. Blowing past its original goal of $1,760, backers pledged a whopping $12,447 by the deadline, unlocking nine stretch goals including a composed soundtrack, alchemy, underwater locations, and houses. "Insigificant" started as a one-man operation developed by Dan Rickmers, a New York University graduate now based in Pasadena, Ca. Read more »

The Space Between Heaven And Hell

After several years of a friend’s insistence, I decided to take a look at "Disgaea: Hour of Darkness." "Disgaea" games are still being developed by Nippon Ichi Software to this day. This week marks the 10th anniversary of "Disgaea’s" North American release. Read more »

Digging in the Mines for Treasure with Spelunky World for PC

Digging in the Mines for Treasure with Spelunky World for PC

If you kill the shopkeeper, you’re a terrorist

When Player Theory discovered that there’d be a new installation to "Spelunky" I was excited. I like platformers, and I like them more when they’re different or challenging in new and innovative ways. The only thing that made me nervous is being a PC gamer through and through. Although I have a USB controller for games that require them, I prefer my keyboard. But I was so excited for "Spelunky" that I made an exception. Read more »

Of Kerbals and Space and Programs

In June 2011, an unassuming sandbox game was released as a public alpha. It was called "Kerbal Space Program." The goal was to build a rocketship, put a green guy called a Kerbal into it, and try to get them into space. That was it. No campaign. No money to worry about. Just an unlimited number of thrusters, fuel tanks, and overly-enthusiastic Kerbals. Read more »

Papers, Please

Papers, Please

Is that a knife strapped to your leg, or are you happy to see me?

It’s difficult to say what is so gripping about "Papers, Please." The game isn’t especially fun in the traditional sense, but there’s something to it that keeps pulling you back, some sense of needing to improve performance or something about letting the right people into your country while keeping the wrong ones out. It’s best described as a puzzle game, and the game’s trailer calls it a "Dystopian Document Thriller" if that gives you a sense of where this is heading. Read more »

Chroma Squad, Activate!!!

Everyone probably remembers that one show that they would rush home after school every single day to catch the last half of their favorite TV show. Or if the bus was going particularly fast that day, you might have even gotten to watch the whole thing. For me, that show was the "Power Rangers," and I'm sure I was not alone in that boat. In the early- to mid-90's, "Power Rangers" was the show to watch; it had superheroes, giant robots, aliens, monsters, and too many cheesy special effects and one-liners to count. Even though each episode was essentially the same thing, the show had an energy that captured the imagination of any kid that watched it. Read more »

Throwback Thursday: Myst

There’s no better game to play when you’re feeling asocial

I didn’t finish "Myst" last night like I wanted to, but I got significantly farther than I did when I originally played the game at seven years old. The original run took me a year with help from my mom. I’m proud to say I played this save all by myself this time. Read more »

Prison Architect

Prison Architect

Step One: Build Fences

I thought long and hard about whether or not it was fair to target "Prison Architect" for a review. The game is still largely in development - only an alpha. How can I put this half-made, indie game up against multi-million dollar, triple-A titles and rate them on the same scale? Well, this past Summer Steal sale, "Prison Architect" was selected as one of the official summer trading cards for the entire sale. Out of the hundreds of fully developed games available, a small indie game was the one that stood out and became one of the 10 coveted trading cards to represent one of the biggest PC sales of the entire year.
