Kicking It With Jon Williams
Of Knite and Ghost Lights
I've become rather wary with my funding on Kickstarter. As much as I like supporting new upstart projects and ideas, too often I feel like my money isn't used wisely or simply disappears, and I never see anything for it. Yes, that is the risk of the website, but it is still frustrating. Nonetheless, I still find myself browsing new Kickstarter projects every other day. I've gotten good at not dropping my money at every single thing that looks remotely cool, but occasionally something comes along that seems so unique and fantastic that it grabs my attention right away. Firefly: The Game
Keep Flying with the New “Firefly” Tabletop Experience
Since "Firefly" aired on FOX in 2002, fans of director Joss Whedon flocked to it and gobbled up the too few 13 episodes. "Firefly", for the uninitiated, follows a crew led by captain Mal Reynolds on his firefly-class spaceship, Serenity. In many ways, it’s your typical sci-fi space western: a crew that picks up jobs from less than savory people, a centralized government that can’t be trusted, and characters with tortured pasts that bleed through their everyday tasks. However, anyone who knows the show knows that it was much, much more than that, which is why last week’s release of "Firefly: The Game " was so exciting. Read more »
GTA Online
What a Billion Dollars Gets You These Days
Just as in our "Prison Architect" review, much thought was given to when exactly it was fair to review "GTA Online." While "GTAO" isn’t technically in beta testing, Rockstar gave fair warning to players to expect some issues immediately following launch last week. Recent major online launches like "Diablo III" and "Sim City" have proven that while first-day log in frustrations may be valid, they’re not representative of the game’s quality as a whole. "GTAO" is no exception to this rule; it relies on interaction across thousands of players to adequately demonstrate the game’s mechanics and execution. With that in mind, I thought a few days following launch should suffice. Of course, Rockstar’s network infrastructure had other plans. Read more »
Zeboyd Games Kickstarts Cosmic Star Heroine
Saving the Galaxy Was so Much Easier as a Stranger
Zeboyd Games meets its $100,000 Kickstarter goal for "Cosmic Star Heroine" less than two weeks after the campaign’s Oct. 1 launch. This will be Zeboyd’s fifth game, following "Cthulhu Saves the World", "Breath of Death VII,", and the two-part conclusion of Penny Arcade’s "Rain-Slick" series. Previous titles have been successful (and friendly to gamers working on a budget), and this one looks as though it will have some interesting changes to which Zeboyd fans have grown accustomed.

Cookie Clicker
Obsession has a new name
It sounds simple enough. One day, a man named Orteil made a game when he was bored. Click a cookie, get more cookies, and spend cookies on items and upgrades to get even more cookies. Why? No reason. Just because. Then the Internet found it. Add in more buildings and some achievements, and you have the latest viral game. Read more »

Audiosurf 2
Riding Some Tunes
I should preface this by saying how much I love music-based games and "Audiosurf" is easily my favorite of the genre. According to Steam, I've logged 104 hours in the original "Audiosurf" game, and that seems fair. "Audiosurf" is fantastic, because it only takes a couple of minutes to play a round, and then you can go back to other things. During college, I would take breaks from papers by blasting through some fast music, or I would calm myself for bed by playing some slower songs and letting the game's visuals hypnotize me. Throwback Thursday: Chip’s Challenge
There’s a Bug in the System
Originally developed in 1989, “Chip’s Challenge” was a puzzle game which required you – Chip – to find a way to complete increasingly difficult puzzle challenges. You knew you completed the challenge when you found your way unobstructed to a blue tile after getting past obstacles like ice, fire. There were a total of 148 levels to complete in the original; there were 149 in the Microsoft version. Read more »
Creating Worlds in Manyland
Drawing New Worlds in a Creative-Mode Platformer
Open-world sandbox games have littered the indie gaming scene, exploding with the popularity of "Minecraft." Being able to explore a world together – sometimes with friends, others with strangers – is fascinating, a feeling that’s multiplied exponentially when you get to build together. Of course, the ability to explore and create with strangers isn’t anywhere near new; it’s one of the most basic features of an MMO. But lately, the desire to work together and create – rather than destroy with a sniper from a hidden spot on the top of a building – has bled into other genres. Read more »
Grand Theft Auto V
The Media’s Newest Scapegoat Arrives in Force
Rockstar’s $265 million juggernaut launched last week, signaling the end of this console generation with a massive map, immersive story, and stunning gameplay to make open-world game developers rethink their methods for years to come. The numbers alone showed the anticipation from the gamer community, with “Grand Theft Auto V” recouping its sales before launch day, making $800 million globally on the first day and climbing over the $1 billion mark by the second. Rockstar made huge promises about this game over the past year and cashed in on them all. Read more »
Sentinels of the Multiverse
A Game For Heroes
It's really no mistake that I'm writing this article while the 2012 "Avengers" movie plays in the background. Both are similar in nature, and it's hard to imagine a game like "Sentinels of the Multiverse" existing without something like the Avengers existing (or Justice League or other big superhero teams). They very much go hand in hand. Read more »
