“Among the Sleep”
A Toddler's Journey Into Horror
Survival horror is a subgenre of horror that sets itself apart from other by introducing traditionally more difficult elements like lack of proper means of fighting back, running away, a more intense atmosphere, and more psychological means of scaring the player. "Among the Sleep" takes these ideas in mind and utilizes it to full effect with a twist; you get to play as a toddler exploring a strange world in search of his mother. While the premise itself is set up to be exciting, it unfortunately falls flat and tired despite the promise of a breath of fresh air. Read more »

“Mario Kart 8”
Fuel Up and Enjoy the Ride
I was terrible at racing games when I was younger, and “Mario Kart” was no exception. I often made rookie mistakes like driving the wrong direction, falling off cliffs, and swinging wide directly into match-destroying bananas, so much so that my drive to master the genre increased tenfold. More than others. But the promise of new tracks and older, loved tracks called to me for the eighth time, and it was impossible to resist. Read more »

“Trials Fusion”
Trial and a Few Errors
"Trials Fusion" made it clear to me that there are essentially two distinct genres of games. Focusing on whether something is an RPG, a shooter, or an adventure game is much too technical of an analysis. I now realize that a game should only be classified as either happily immersive or challengingly rewarding. I admit that this sounds like a naïve generalization, but despite the wide variety of games these days, genre classification simply comes down to the type of satisfaction a game shoots for. Microsoft Mocks Itself in “Escape from XP”
Who Knew They Had a Sense of Humor?
Microsoft finally killed support for Windows XP – now 12 years old – earlier this week. However, we were unprepared for the threat that is Clippy firing laser beams out of his massive eyeballs. Read more »
