The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth

The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth

I’m Going Straight To Hell, Just Like My Mama Said

“The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth” launched this week as a remake of “The Binding of Isaac,” this time with designer Edward McMillen handing the reins to indie developer Nicalis. Although there are some major changes within the game itself, it does remain (and deeply true to the original production) that “Rebirth” is a remake. Even the opening story is a word-for-word reproduction, but bear in mind that neither game is about having a commanding narrative. It is a game about having fun and being challenging for no other purpose than to play a challenging game in a day and age of constant auto-saves, do-overs, and press-X-to-win mechanics.

My Frustration for 50 Cents

“Alien: Isolation”

“Alien: Isolation”

In Space, No One Can Hear You Scream

The "Alien" series is one that is very close to my heart. I was allowed to see the Alien movies before I was seven years old, and those shadowy, acid-filled monsters covered in claws and teeth were very fundamental to how I perceived horror. I have devoured just about every "Alien" or "Alien vs. Predator" game that I've come across. And they've all basically followed the same formula: the aliens come in drove, and you gun them all down. Rinse and repeat until the game is over. Read more »

“Bayonetta 2”

Star of Action Has Arrived to the Party

Nintendo graciously let “Bayonetta 2” live on in the wake of funding absence, despite fan and critic appraisal and a decent number in sales. This begs the question: Is the continuation of the hack-and-slash game “Bayonetta” worth your attention?

I will be upfront: go buy “Bayonetta 2:” Get a Wii U and play this game. All gamers should be playing this game. I haven’t seen this much polish and love put into a video game in a long time. Not only do you get the sequel, but it also comes with the first “Bayonetta” updated for the Wii U. This game is jammed pack with non-stop climax action, and it won’t disappoint. Read more »

Just Needs a Bit More Avatar Training

Video game adaptations of different mediums are … tricky beasts to comprehend. They started out great with “DuckTales” and the varying Mickey Mouse games on the NES, SNES, and Genesis. Sure, there were several lackluster ones as well, but normally when a game adaptation was mentioned, people were excited. Not so much nowadays. Most notorious with movies that just released on the big screen, many companies tried to rush a game out that falls further than short to match the movie’s standards. Unless an adaptation is well planned ahead to exist in the universe or on its own (e.g., the “Batman Arkham" series), video game adaptations don’t inspire a lot of confidence. Read more »

“The Keep” for 3DS

“The Keep” for 3DS

Can it "Keep" up with its brethren?

"C'mon, c'mon, c'mon!" I say to myself as the plane is filling up. I was trying vehemently to finish downloading this game before we pulled away from the gate, as I will soon lose access to the airport Wi-Fi. Just as the engines started, I was greeted with a downloaded game eShop game: "The Keep" by Prague-based CINEMAX (not to be confused with the premium content channel on your cable or satellite box). Will “Destiny” Fulfill its Destiny?

Will “Destiny” Fulfill its Destiny?

An Enjoyable Side of Sci-Fi Coop

“Destiny” has been out for nearly a month now, and a lot has happened in that month. From a rise and fall of a cave of loot wonders to a vendor who nearly stole our items (I want my legendary back cryptarch), “Destiny” has managed to become more than a game. It has gathered a community for those of us who have been waiting for another fun sci-fi coop shooter. If that isn’t what you wanted, then it may not be worth the time. Read more »

“Super Smash Bros.” for 3DS

“Super Smash Bros.” for 3DS

To Smash or Not to Smash, That Is the Question

It’s been six years since “Super Smash Bros. Brawl” was released, and the wait for the next installment(s) has felt even longer. Development for the next “Super Smash Bros.” game from there was locked tight from the public until director Masahiro Sakurai completed his game “Kid Icarus: Uprising.” Come E3 2013, the game was officially revealed, and the fandom rejoiced. Not only was there a new “Super Smash Bros.” coming to the Wii U, but for the first time “Super Smash Bros.” would be on a handheld device: the Nintendo 3DS. And now the time has come to smash together with friends portably. Does “Super Smash Bros.” play well on a handheld, or should it have just stayed with Nintendo’s main consoles? Read more »
