War Thunder

War Thunder

Take to the Skies!

I have so many games on Steam that it's ridiculous. I've probably only played 20 percent of them to any sort of completion. I have plenty of free time. I have a nice computer. Playing video games is literally part of my job here at Player Theory, and yet so many in my collection sit unplayed. So a few weeks ago, I can't tell you what I was doing perusing the free-to-play games on Steam. Why would I do that to myself? I don't know why I clicked on "War Thunder". I have no real interest in WW2 aviation sims. I don't know why I started playing it, but I did. Read more »

Chivalry: Deadliest Warrior

Chivalry: Deadliest Warrior

What every middle school student WANTED history class to be about

Pirate vs. Ninja? Knight vs. Viking? Spartan vs. Samurai? Astronaut vs. Caveman? You'd be hard-pressed to find someone that hadn't at one point engaged in the pointless discussion of "Who would win?" out of two seemingly equivalent groups. It's a fun and addicting conversation, but it ultimately leads to nothing except frustration. That is a feeling that Torn Banners managed to accomplish with the "Deadliest Warrior" DLC for its "Chivalry: Medieval Warfare" game. While may not quite quite have cavemen and astronauts yet (though points to you if you got the reference), the other factions do make a grand appearance. Read more »

The Walking Dead: All That Remains (Season 2, Episode 1)

Walkers, a Dog, and a Shed You’ll Never Forget

Telltale Games resumed its "Walking Dead" series this month with the onset of the second season, this time shifting away from Lee, the protagonist of the first season, to center around young Clementine. After a brief introduction, the plot advances 16 months to show Clementine as she’s separated from the last living person to care for her, leaving her alone to face the stark reality of the zombified, er, walkerfied world. New allies abound, although the favorable ones aren’t as clearly cut as in previous installments. Read more »

Firefly: The Game

Firefly: The Game

Keep Flying with the New “Firefly” Tabletop Experience

Since "Firefly" aired on FOX in 2002, fans of director Joss Whedon flocked to it and gobbled up the too few 13 episodes. "Firefly", for the uninitiated, follows a crew led by captain Mal Reynolds on his firefly-class spaceship, Serenity. In many ways, it’s your typical sci-fi space western: a crew that picks up jobs from less than savory people, a centralized government that can’t be trusted, and characters with tortured pasts that bleed through their everyday tasks. However, anyone who knows the show knows that it was much, much more than that, which is why last week’s release of "Firefly: The Game " was so exciting. Read more »

What a Billion Dollars Gets You These Days

Just as in our "Prison Architect" review, much thought was given to when exactly it was fair to review "GTA Online." While "GTAO" isn’t technically in beta testing, Rockstar gave fair warning to players to expect some issues immediately following launch last week. Recent major online launches like "Diablo III" and "Sim City" have proven that while first-day log in frustrations may be valid, they’re not representative of the game’s quality as a whole. "GTAO" is no exception to this rule; it relies on interaction across thousands of players to adequately demonstrate the game’s mechanics and execution. With that in mind, I thought a few days following launch should suffice. Of course, Rockstar’s network infrastructure had other plans. Read more »
