“Until Dawn”
A Horror Movie... Your Way
Decision-making games are usually a hit-or-miss genre for people. You either have games that are driven by your decisions (such as “Heavy Rain”) or more geared with story telling in mind (such as the TellTale Games series of games). People, for the most part, want the former because the game tells the players that their decisions will scope the story. I say that because the more story driven games tend to make player decisions worthless in the long run, such as “The Walking Dead Season 2” and “Beyond: Two Souls.” So with “Until Dawn” came back into the spotlight after disappearing from the PlayStation 3 era, people were skeptical. Would “Until Dawn” fall victim of being vaporware and be a lackluster title that doesn’t take decisions to heart or would it be the next “Heavy Rain?” Read more »
Quick Review: “Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition”
"DMC4," But With Vergil, Trish, and Lady
For those keeping track, "Devil May Cry 4" has been the last game in the main series released back in 2008. After fans have been demanding a new "Devil May Cry" game (traditional, not "DmC: Devil May Cry;" personally I believe we need more white-haired Dante and his antics), Capcom released... "DmC: Devil May Cry: Definitive Edition." But then they released "Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition," in a similar vein "Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition." Read more »

Splatoon
Get Your Tentacles Dirty in the New IP from Nintendo … Or Not
"Splatoon," announced duringE3 2014 as a brand new IP from Nintendo, a developer known for rehashing its IPs until the end of time, finally released last Friday, May 29. The game is based around two squid girls with the power to shoot their color-coded ink at enemy targets to defeat them. A cutesy shooter that’s fun for the whole family is an interesting concept, as is the fact that Nintendo even created a new IP in a usually untouched genre (for them). So how did it do? Read more »

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
The Game That Fantasy Needed
I think it's safe to say that no game set for release in 2015 had as much hype behind it as "The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt." I picked up this newest addition to the series not because I wanted it, but because it came with a graphics card that I purchased. I'm not deaf, so I had been paying all the speculation and the build-up to the game's release last week. I don't have any real memories of any of the other games in the series (I only played the "Witcher 2" for a couple of hours before putting it down) and I really don't have much of a connection to Geralt as the game's hero. It's with that neutral mindset that I entered the world of "The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt." Does it live up to all the hype? Read more »
Sid Meier’s “Starships”
This Isn't Your Mama's "Civilization V!"
I feel like most people associate Sid Meier's exclusively with the "Civilization" series of games, and that is not necessarily a bad thing; they are an excellent and very well thought out series of games (experiences is perhaps more appropriate). This view, though, leaves out the fact that he has made many other simulation games including ones based around railroad systems ("Railroad Tycoon," "Railroads!") and air combat ("Ace Patrol"). This newest venture that bears the Sid Meier's branding is a step beyond other things we've seen from the master of simulation; I give to you Sid Meier's "Starships." Read more »

“Resident Evil Revelations 2”
Not a Jill Sandwich, But Close
There has been a pretty bad image for “Resident Evil” games after “Resident Evil 4.” With “Resident Evil 5” taking a strongly action-oriented approach as opposed to being scary, the horror simply wasn’t there anymore. “Resident Evil 6” walked even further away with zombies with guns. Most people I’ve talked to speak ill about “Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City.” There was one diamond in that rough pile though - “Resident Evil Revelations.” While it doesn’t exactly match up with the older games before “RE4,” it showed that “Resident Evil” could still be somewhat scary and play well.
