“Witcher 3” Getting 16 Free DLC Packs Across All Platforms
New Content Will Release Every Week After Launch
CD Projekt RED announced today its plans to release 16 free DLC for "The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt." You heard us correctly. The Polish developer is taking a stand against predatory after-market content by releasing a new DLC bundle every week following the game's Feb. 24, 2015 release.
This generous offer requires no pre-order or special edition; if you own any copy of the game, the DLC are as good as yours. Each bundle contains two bits of content, with the first batch landing on Feb. 25, the day after release. On that day, we can expect the Temerian Armor Set (plus horse armor) and Beard and Hairstyle Set for Geralt's grooming pleasure.
CDPR knows that EA's "Dragon Age: Inquisition" will include paid add-on content and Season Pass shenanigans. While "Witcher 3" can do little to stem the holiday sales of BioWare's latest RPG, it can remind us that gouging is a tactic reserved for rogues and swashbucklers.
Marcin Iwiński, co-founder and joint CEO of CD Projekt RED, penned an open letter as part of the announcement. In it, he petitions for a more gamer-centric perspective on price and purchasing power.
We love games. We love collecting them, playing them, and everything connected to that experience. Every time we reach out for a new release, we expect to be taken care of. We expect support if we encounter any problems, we love updates constantly improving the experience, and we feel really special when we receive free content that gives us more than we initially paid for. It doesn’t have to be huge, it can be an awesome skin for a character, or an extra sword, or armor.
Unfortunately this treatment is quite rare these days. As gamers, we nowadays have to hold on tight to our wallets, as surprisingly right after release, lots of tiny pieces of tempting content materialize with a steep price tag attached. Haven’t we just paid a lot of cash for a brand new game? Marcin Iwiński
