“Tribes: Ascend” To Get First Update In Two Years - Load Your Spinfusors

It's been a long time since someone has talked about "Tribes: Ascend," and for good reason - the game seemed dead. Today, however, that is going to change. The aptly named "Out of the Blue" patch is set to be released later today, bringing a lot of changes to the fast-paced shooter and, with luck, bringing it back to life.

Hi-Rez will start applying the patch at 10am EST today, and it's expected to take about six hours. The patch is pretty significant, adding three maps, balancing weapons and vehicles and changing a lot of mechanics.

The biggest change is the removal of the class system and replacing it with an armor system, which is very reminiscent of how the original "Tribes" game worked. So, rather than choosing to be a sniper or an engineer or any other number of classes, you simply choose if you want to have light, medium or heavy armor. The weapons available to you change based on what armor you choose. This opens the game up to a lot more individual customization, letting players make builds that let them play how they want to play.

The three new maps are Ice Coaster, Perdition and Terminus. The first two are based off of maps from "Tribes" and "Tribes 2," and the third are based off maps already in "Tribes: Ascend."

How will this patch actually play out? We'll have to see when the patch goes live this afternoon. As a long-time fan of the "Tribes" series, I've already reinstalled "Tribes: Ascend" in preparation.
