The Witcher 3 Has Sixteen Hours of Motion Capture Sex Scene Data
Geralt is a Busy Man...
"The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt" had it's release date pushed back last year from February to May so the developers could finish some last minute details and provide the "Witcher" series fanbase the game that it deserves. Obviously, while we want the finished game to be polished and, well ... finished, all this waiting around can make some people impatient and look for any new information about the new game.
According to an article in The Guardian, which touches upon some of the the more mature subjects that some video games dive into, "The Witcher 3" has 16 hours of mo-cap sex scenes.
That is a lot of mo-cap sex.
Sex has never been a subject that the "Witcher" series has shyed away from - whether it was the first game with it's infamous "romance" cards or the actual sex scenes in the "Witcher 2." With the "Witcher 3," the game opens on one such scene, which has some people wondering if it's just for the sake of "fantasy" or if there is an actual plot point involved.
People might think we’re putting sex into the opening scene for no good reason. No, no, no. We are establishing that your character was intimate with this woman recently in order to plant in your mind that, at very least, he must enjoy her company. We have shown that this is a person who Geralt would be compelled to chase after if she went missing. Sex is the quickest way in which to establish the relationship and provide a justification for the player to pursue this woman. We couldn’t just tell you to go find someone you don’t know or care about. It wouldn’t work.”
Damien Monhier, Senior Game Designer
Based on what we've seen in the released opening cinematic for "The Witcher 3," it seems that a big plot line for the game will involve Geralt searching for Yennefer, the woman that he starts the game with in the aforementioned scene.
While in the first game, the "collectible" sex cards came off as a bit tacky, the "Witcher" series has grown and has never just ignored sex as a part of "real life." It can be argued that this adds an element of believability to a game which is also home to dragons and griffins and magic. In an interview this past summer, Miles Tost (the game's level designer) touched on this subject:
We make mature games for mature players (every "Witcher" game is for adults only) and sex is, well, a part of adult life. The key thing is not to overdo it, not to sell your game with sex. As long as you remain tactful in what you do, as long as you have a legitimate reason to put sex in your game, I think it’s quite safe to do so.
