The Road to Evo
With NCR Wrapping Up, Road to Evo Continues
North California Regionals has just wrapped up, one of the fighting game tournaments preceding Evolution Championship Series (Evo). Evo is the biggest annual fighting game tournament. The professional players come from all around the world just to play the best of the best.
Evo has set the standard for fighting game tournaments and sees the most hype action! Three games normally headline the hype: "Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition," "Marvel VS Capcom 3," and "Injustice Gods Among Us". "Street Fighter" normally holds the top position and goes on last the day of Grand Finals, and professional players use the tournaments in between to get good practice for the grand stage!
North California Regionals (NCR)
NCR is one of the bigger tournaments with a big turnout of players (PRBalrog, Justin Wong, Infiltration, K-Brad). These guys are no strangers to this competition and all showed up to throw their hat in the ring this year. PRBalrog upset the event by taking first place in "Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition" in a heated Grand Finals against Infiltration. As Justin Wong took the win in "Marvel VS Capcom 3" against Cloud805. Cloud805 actually had an upset of his own when he put out Filipinochamp.
NCR also saw "Killer Instinct" (KI) for the first time as Mrgrimmmz took down Justin Wong to claim the first ever KI NCR Championship. This is a big year for KI as it will be its first year at Evo. Infamous fighting game guru, Maximilian, promises that he will be there and participate this year in KI.
New Games at This Year's Evo
Two new games are going to be at Evo this year, and the hype for these titles are real: "Killer Instinct" and the brand new "Ultra Street Fighter IV!" Both of these games are getting their first Evo. This is another "Street Fighter" iteration, but this one boast five new characters, as well as all kinds of balance tweaks and new modes.
With huge names like Daigo, Infiltration, and Xian, this year's Evo looks to be packed with good matches, hype, and of course, too much salt. EVO is July 11-14 in Las Vegas. If you can't make it to Evo this year, you can catch the many streams running on Twitch.tv.
