“Street Fighter V” Trailer Analysis
What Can We Expect from the New "Street Fighter?"
"Street Fighter V" released a trailer showing off a work in progress, and shortly after, a gameplay demo was released. Now I'm going to discuss a few things that we can determine from these videos.
Watching closely will reveal a few things. For starters, Ryu and Chun-Li at some point take a stance that powers their moves up for a period of time. Ryu seems to cause guard breaks with his hadokens as well as lightning properties to his tatsumaki's. Chun-Li gets additional hits to her moves and the ability to throw faster fireballs.
Another thing that becomes apparent is that each character has different sized meter bars; Ryu has two and Chun-Li has three. This could be a similar mechanic from "Street Fighter III: Third Strike" where when you select your character you can select their super move, which determines how many meters you will have max each round. This also seems to determine how long the powered stance lasts. Upon activation of Ryu's power stance, Chun-Li jumps in and hits him with a heavy punch instantly knocking him out of the power stance. But when the same happens with Chun-Li, her power stance isn't cancelled the same way, seemingly due to the larger meter bar.
A lot of people are thinking parries are in the game, but I'm not so sure. Parries became popular in "Street Fighter III: Third Strike," allowing a character to stop an attack and follow up quickly with a counter attack. After watching the trailer multiple times here's what I've come to think: when some of Ryu's attacks get blocked, the animation seems to change with him pulling his arm or leg away as if it stopped the momentum. Where this does look like a parry, it just seems to be a nice touch in the animation. I hope as time goes by we will get more solid proof and can definitely say parries are in the game, but as it stands, I don't believe they're included.
One of the most exciting things about the trailer is the appearance of Charlie at the end. According to the story, Charlie was Guile's partner and the one killed by Bison. So the first thing that comes to mind is "Charlie is dead, how are they gonna explain..." and then that thought is quickly interrupted when we see the jewel light up on his forehead. The jewel represents resurrection. We know this remembering the boss from "Street Fighter III: Third Strike," Gill. After defeating Gill in a round he would resurrect, and you would have to defeat him again. This made me really excited to see how they're going to explain the way Charlie was resurrected.
So there you go, all the things we can determine from the trailer. But don't just take my word for it, check out the trailer below, and stay here with us at Player Theory for more news and updates.
