Spelunky Platformer Set for Aug. 8

Spelunky World PC Release Set for Next Week - Spelunky Platformer Set for Aug. 8

"Spelunky," a twist on the classic platformer genre, will be released for PC on Aug. 8.

Although seemingly inspired by some of the classics like the “Mario” franchise, “Spelunky” gives players much more freedom by making the entire level “fully-destructable,” generates new, randomized levels when the character dies, and allowing players to utilize nearly every item they come across. The new title offers co-op and death match modes, including AIs for users who want to play the death match challenge without finding other players.

Mossmouth aimed to create an entirely new game with the next installment of the title:

It's much more than a port of the original game, and has new graphics, music, zones, monsters, items, traps, and secrets.

The original 2008 “Spelunky” title is free to play, and was nominated for three IGF awards. It even netted a win for Excellence in Design. The sequel aims to improve on the original through updated graphics, new zones, and new features that don't interfere with previous challenges (e.g., speedrunning). However, the new "challenge" feature will only be available from the Steam version; GOG users won't have access to it. It is currently available in the Xbox Live Arcade for 1,200 Microsoft Points. The PC version will cost $15.

If you’re into platformers, keep an eye out for “Spelunky” on Steam and GOG next week.
