Sakurai on “Super Smash Bros.” DLC & Ridley
DLC Not Planned Yet and Ridley's Unfortunate Stature
"Super Smash Bros." will be releasing on Nov. 21 for the Wii U North America, Nov. 28 in Europe, and Dec. 6 in Japan, and there are some questions on what is in store for future "Smash" content and why Ridley isn't a playable character. IGN recently interviewed Director Masahiro Sakurai and told IGN what to expect with DLC and Ridley's status in "Super Smash Bros." for Wii U.
Sakurai told IGN that while Mewtwo, a previously cut character from "Super Smash Bros. Melee," will be the first character to be downloadable, there isn't any paid DLC planned.
As for why Mewtwo isn't paid content from the start, releasing that character is an experiment meant to act as a foothold in content distribution; thus it's simply meant as part of the service we're providing to gamers. ... what I can say now about paid DLC is that we aren't working on anything at the moment. We've put all our efforts into making the actual game. Creating DLC would involve large additional costs and require the involvement of a lot of people. Masahiro Sakurai to IGN
It seems that Sakurai and the rest of the team wants to work on completing the full game first before working on additional content, making sure the game is complete and functional. Do note that he didn't flat out say DLC isn't ruled out completely. The priority has always been the game first, then looking at additional content.
Sakurai also told IGN that Ridley would lose what makes Ridley a unique character.
Providing accurate portrayals of characters is something I want to pay ample attention to ... If I don’t stick to that thought, then we’d have to lower the quality or break the balance of the game. Something that goes way off spec could break the entire game ... Instead of going through a lot of very convoluted hocus-pocus to make Ridley a fighter, I figured it’d be better to keep Ridley as it currently is, the correct way, and have it feel like a truly threatening presence ... There are other icons, too, like Metal Face and the Yellow Devil, which help effectively portray each of their world settings. They go a long way toward deepening the game world, and I think it’s been fun to experiment with. Masahiro Sakurai to IGN
Sakurai doesn't have faith that he could capture Ridley as a fighter so he put him in as more of a sure way that people could see Ridley as who it is.
"Super Smash Bros." is heading to the Wii U with amiibos launching along side. Mewtwo as a DLC fighter is slated to release in spring 2015.
