PlayStation Exec: Connecting Xbox One and PS4 Networks “Could Be Easy”
Business Side of Things Could Be the Difficult Part
After Microsoft openly invited other platform holders to connect their networks with Xbox Live, there has been much discussion over the possibility of rival consoles actually coming together. Though the process sounds impossible, one Sony executive has stated that the process is actually much easier than it sounds.
Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sony Computer Entertainment's worldwide studios, in an interview with Eurogamer, said that the technical work required to allow cross-platform multiplayer between the Xbox One and PS4 "could be the easiest part", pointing out that Sony has supported cross-platform functionality in the past with its own consoles. Recent examples include allowing PS4 and PC owners to play against each other in "Rocket League" and "Street Fighter V."
"Because PC is an open platform it's much more straightforward [compared to Xbox One]. Connecting two different closed networks is much more complicated, so we have to work with developers and publishers to understand what it is they are trying to accomplish" he explained, "We also have to look at the technical aspect. The technical aspect could be the easiest."
From the sound of it, the real difficulty lies in the business side of things, particularly concerning the publishing of a game and the policy issues that are presented by connecting the two networks.
When asked about whether they would be willing to work with Microsoft, Sony officially stated that they "would be happy to have the conversation with any publishers or developers who are interested in cross platform play." While it's still too early to say anything, Microsoft and Sony connecting their respective networks could potentially open up new possibilities for the world of gaming.
