PlayStation 4 May Get Backwards Compatibility After All
Select PS1 and PS2 Titles May Be Playable on PS4
Rumors are circulating about possible backwards compatibility with PS1 and PS2 titles for the PlayStation 4 after all based on functionality discovered in PlayStation Now, a game streaming service from Sony now in private beta for the PS3.
One of the drawbacks to the current-generation PlayStation is that it does not support PS1 and PS2 games, which are still relatively popular considering the age of some of the games. (“Dance Dance Revolution” comes to mind, but that may just be me.) Players were promised cloud-based services that supported classic games, similar to the Nintendo eShop on the Wii and WiiU consoles.
However, PlayStation Official Magazine in the UK reported today that there may be plans to integrate compatibility for older titles after all.
Self-titled “tech enthusiast” Ahsan Rasheed tweeted early this morning that “local PS2 / PS1 support on PS4 w/ native 1080p” for certain titles. Rasheed’s claim is supported by invites for the PlayStation Now private beta on the PlayStation 3. PlayStation Now is reported to use local emulation rather than cloud-based services, as documented in the PlayStation official knowledge base.
