New “Baldur’s Gate” Game In Development
Will Bridge The Stories Between "Baldur's Gate 1 & 2"
Beamdog, the developer behind the enhanced editions of the "Baldur's Gate" series and "Icewind Dale," has announced that their relatively secret project known only as "Adventure Y" is actually a new "Baldur's Gate" game.
This year, the eagerly anticipated Adventure Y will finally navigate the dark underground caverns of development and venture out into the Sword Coast. We’ve mentioned before that Adventure Y will be an addition to the Baldur’s Gate line using the Infinity engine, bridging the gap between Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition and Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition.

The "Baldur's Gate" series is a treasured RPG classic, with the first game having celebrated it's 16th birthday this past December ("Baldur's Gate" is old enough to drive now, guys). The game was set in the Forgotten Realms campaign setting and used the now ancient 2nd Edition rules for "Dungeons and Dragons." As BeamDog has said, this new game will give us some story and bridge the gap between the defeat of Sarevok in the first game and waking up in the care of Jon Irenicus in the second game.
Along with the announcement of this new addition to the series, some cellphone photos of the game were also "leaked:"
We have the familiar art style...
We learn something about some dukes...
And I'm sure, we will learn exactly what we should be afraid of.
When can we expect to see this game? Well, that is still up in the air. BeamDog does seem ready to impress with this new addition, according to the announcement: "We have an exciting release planned for this game, something bigger than we’ve ever done before." BeamDog has also told everyone to keep an eye out on their blog in the late Spring for more details on this game.
There is a lot of talk about BeamDog also heading the charge for an official "Baldur's Gate 3" release, but it seems that isn't in the cards just yet. They are "thinking about it," and according to this 2012 interview, it is seen as a long-term goal - one that they might turn to Kickstarter to get off the ground.
There is a Project Z that BeamDog briefly talks about in their Baldur's Gate announcement. They give no real details, but they do hint that it could have something to do with sharks.
Right now all we can say....is that it [Project Z] exists and it’s a departure for us in terms of what we’ve done in the past. Also, the project might involve sharks.

Player Theory will be watching out for any "Baldur's Gate" news this Spring, and we will fill you in on the possible shark-infested "Project Z" as details are released this summer.
Beamdog was created by BioWare co-founder Trent Oster and former lead programmer Tofer in 2010.
