Microsoft Acquires Rights to “Gears of War” Franchise
Solidifies Franchise as Xbox Exclusive
Microsoft Studios has acquired the rights to the "Gears of War" franchise from Epic Games. This deal includes rights to all existing and future games, merchandise and entertainment experiences, solidifying it as an Xbox exclusive for the foreseeable future.
With Epic Games no longer at the helm, Black Tusk Studios in Vancouver, BC will continue development of future titles. Microsoft Studios head Phil Spencer comments on the shift saying he is confident in Black Tusk leader Hanno Lemke, who spared no expense in assembling the best team possible for the series. Further, Phil announced that Rod Fergusson, an Epic Games veteran will help in overseeing future operations.
In an effort to quell rumours circulating over Epic's end, PR Manager Wes Phillips tweeted today that epic has several games in the works to come:
And for people saying Epic isn't making games anymore, we currently have multiple games in development, including @FortniteGame.
