Microsoft to Purchase Mojang AB
Unknown if Payment Will Be in Diamonds
The Wall Street Journal reported today that Microsoft is about to close a deal to purchase Mojang AB. The deal could close as early as this week.
It is reported that the amount of money on the table for Mojang AB is right around 2 billion dollars.
Mojang AB is the developer behind the hugely successful game "Minecraft" in which players are given a randomly-generated open-sandbox world and the ability to build just about anything they can imagine. On PC/Mac alone, "Minecraft" has sold over 16 million copies, and that number increases significantly if you include sales on consoles.
It's hard to imagine what Microsoft hopes to gain by purchasing Mojang AB and "Minecraft" this late in the game. While it is still hugely popular, it's hard to imagine that there are still people out there that want "Minecraft" that have not already bought it. If the deal goes through, it will be interesting to see how a defiantly indie company like Mojang AB will be influenced by one of the biggest tech companies on the planet.
