“Mad Max” Gameplay Overview - The Wasteland Is No Place For A Conscience

Avalanche Studios gave us a taste of the gameplay that will be used in the open-world "Mad Max" game that is due for release later this year. Players will be given control over the legendary character "Max" as he cruises the post-apocalyptic 'The Big Nothing.' Check out the gameplay trailer here:

The game starts with Max being beaten and having everything taken from him - including his car. One can't simply walk around a giant, empty desert without a set of wheel, so keeping true to the spirit of the films, a huge aspect of the gameplay in "Mad Max" revolves around collecting scrap and building up a new, killer (literally) car which the game calls the Magnum Opus.

We get a glance at the car customization in gameplay trailer, and it seems fairly standard - using scrap metal, you're able to boost speed, ramming ability or toughness. It provides just enough variation so you could really have multiple strategies when it comes to the game's vehicular combat - do you go fast so you can get away and not be bothered or do you go big and heavy and crush any that would try to cross you?

Along with collecting scrap metal from the Wasteland so you can upgrade your Magnum Opus, you can also stumble upon rare parts that you can use to really give your car a boost.

The game isn't all car carnage, though. The game looks like it utilizes some brutal hand-to-hand combat, so it's going to be important to keep Max outfitted with the best armor and weapons that you can find. It looks like guns will be a part of the game, but ammo will be super rare so it'll be up to the player to find and craft weapons from the scrap pieces that litter the world.

Along with finding armor and weapons, the game will have some level-up RPG aspects that allow Max to upgrade his abilities and become the best post-apocalyptic-wasteland survivor that he can be.

The last big aspect of the gameplay will be the NPC strongholds that Max can stumble upon in his journey. Depending on the player's interaction with these neutral areas, they can become allies and actually grow and flourish as Max does different jobs for them.

Oh, and if you missed it, there is a definite shot of the Thunderdome in that gameplay trailer, so you can bet that it'll play a part at some point. You can't really have a Mad Max game without using the Thunderdome at least once, right?

"Mad Max" is due for release on September 1, 2015 in North America and can be purchased on PS4, XBox One and PC.
