“Legend of Zelda” Director Discusses “Majora’s Mask 3D” Development - Didn't Want Just Another Remake

Taking to Miiverse, "The Legend of Zelda" director Eiji Aonuma discussed the development of "The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D" following "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D."

The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D was actually in development almost immediately after we finished working on The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, which was released in June of 2011. So although we’ve been working on the game for quite some time, we didn't want to say it was being developed until we were at a point where we could proudly say that this is not going to be just another remake and that it's going to be worth your time. For a while now, when fans from Japan and around the world would ask me if we were working on a Majora's Mask remake, I would silently plead in my heart, thinking, “Please wait a bit longer!” (laughs). It makes sense that Nintendo didn't want to release any information on the game until they felt confident on the product. There have been subtle hints Nintendo gave out that "Majora's Mask" was being made, such as Zelda Williams bringing out a replica of Majora's Mask to the "Super Smash Bros." Invitational at E3 2014, the iconic moon coming out of (seemingly) nowhere during the E3 discussion of "Hyrule Warriors," and the promotional artwork of the series' protagonist Link wearing the titular mask on top of his head for Japanese summer festivities in 2014.

"The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D" was recently revealed during the Nov. 5 Nintendo Direct and is scheduled for a Spring 2015 release date.
