Gamecube Controller & Adapter Only for “Super Smash Bros.”
Adapter Won't Work with Other Software
Recently posted on the Nintendo Official UK Store , the Nintendo Gamecube Controller Adapter has some new information. Originally, the post stated that the Adapter will allow the controller to function with software that would work with Wii U Pro Controller along with original Wii software. However, that posted was removed and a new post was placed in its place.
Please note the GameCube Controller Adapter for Wii U is compatible with Wii U and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U specifically - it is not compatible with any other Wii U software. The adapter was first introduced for "Super Smash Bros. for Wii U" with the preferred controller for "Super Smash Bros." in mind. "Super Smash Bros. for Wii U" will release in North America on Nov. 21 with the option for a standard copy of the game or the option for a bundle that includes the game, the adapter, and a "Super Smash Bros.-"styled Gamecube controller. Europe gets the game on Dec. 5, while Japan/Australia have to wait until Dec. 6.
