Gematsu reports that in an interview with Famitsu, "Final Fantasy VII" and "Kingdom Hearts" director Tetsuya Nomura discusses some aspects to expect for the "Final Fantasy VII Remake."

Final Fantasy VII is special, and we can’t "exceed" the game by simply making the graphics nicer. That’s not a thing to be excited about. Precisely because it’s a full remake, I want to challenge what’s fun and what’s possible now.

There won’t be new characters. As for the visual taste, we’re doing them to match today’s visuals and appear closer to reality.

I can’t share details, but we’re changing it to a more realistic system. Tetsuya Nomura

Whether "no new characters" means absolutely nothing new or no new characters from sequels/prequels, such as "Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core" or "Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children," isn't known. What the "more realistic system" means isn't known either, where the original system is getting an upgrade or something similar to "Final Fantasy XIII" or the like.
