EA Rakes in Revenue from DLC, Mobile - EA's Physical Media Profits Slow Down

In their first quarterly report, publisher EA Games revealed they now make more money from their downloadable content, mobile games, and web than they do from traditional physical media. The former pulled in $482 million this quarter, while discs lagged behind at $467 million.

The change in their revenue is no surprise coming from a company that recently moved to publish the second rendition of the beloved “Plants vs. Zombies” franchise for iOS only, at least for now. Between the “PvZ” free-to-play model, “Sim City” DLC, and “Battlefield” map packs, their direction towards mobile and DLC content has been clear to gamers for a long time.

EA's traditional media has been criticized for rehashing the same content year after year. I'm looking at you, “Madden.” It's also easy to understand how users might get tired of going to the store for each new installment for additional couches and TVs for their characters in “The Sims.” Origin is the more convenient choice.

Whether you like EA or not, fans of the infamous military shooter and casual touchscreen games have spoken with their wallets: the newest generation of mobile gaming is coming.
