Crytek Lets Developers Name Their Own Price With CryEngine V - Assets Also Available in Their Marketplace and Humble Bundle

German video game developer Crytek announced during their presentation at the 2016 Game Developers Conference that their newest game engine, CryEngine V, will be sold using a “Pay What You Want” business model.

According to Crytek's press release, developers who purchase CRYENGINE V will have “total access to the engine’s feature-set and full engine source code for a fee of their choosing, and with no obligation to pay royalties or additional service charges”. Buyers who do pay some money for the game engine will have a choice on how the money is allocated - to CRYENGINE Indie Developer Fund or directly to Crytek. The Indie Developer Fund is Crytek’s program to give monetary grants to indie game developers whose projects are developed using CRYENGINE.

According to Crytek’s CEO, founder, and President Cevat Yerli, “CRYENGINE V represents our commitment to not only offering developers today’s most advanced engine technology, but also to making it as accessible as possible.”

Crytek has already made some of its assets available for free in both their marketplace, which is currently in beta, and in Humble Bundle. Their marketplace currently offers 24 free assets, ranging from simple items such as furniture, all the way up to full sample project designed for a shooter game. Humble Bundle, on the other hand, is currently offering the “Campfire Asset Pack” for free simply by providing an email address.

Other items in the “Humble CRYENGINE Bundle” include environment props, audio kit, vehicle pack, weapons pack, two starter projects, and three different asset packs from Crytek’s “Ryse: Son of Rome”. The entire bundle can be unlocked by paying $13 or more, and part of the funds from the bundle will go towards Child’s Play Charity and Extra Life.
