One Million “Smash” Challengers Appear
“Super Smash Bros.” Hits It Big in Japan
“Super Smash Bros.” for 3DS joined the ranks of games like “Pokemon X/Y,” “Monster Hunter 3,” and “Yokai Watch 2” by selling over one million copies during launch weekend in Japan. This is a milestone that few 3DS games have reached, and despite the roster leaks and technical difficulties, “Super Smash Bros.” has thrived.
While this number reflects both physical and digital sales, it is only for the Japanese 3DS version. The Wii U version isn't slated for release in Japan until later this year. While sales for the Wii U are still well below what Nintendo's projection, perhaps “Super Smash Bros.” can give the struggling console the push it needs (and that “Mario Kart 8” failed to give).
"Super Smash Bros." for 3DS will be available in the U.S. on Oct. 3 with the Wii U version rumored to be available in November. Given that this projected sales date falls incredibly close to Black Friday, the busiest shopping day of the year, the hype surrounding the game could definitely help move the system.
